The beauty of our Canvas Utility Suit is that it's in fact the perfect blank canvas to style and make completely your own.

We teamed with Dallas-based creator @aaricanichole to show how easy it is to customize our suit to your liking with this easy afternoon project featuring RIT dye— available at your local craft store.

Our Oat Milk Utility Suit is the perfect base layer for a dye project like this, much like a piece of art, our suit is a blank slate ready to be transformed. We love this option you're longing for a color we haven't released yet, if you have lingering stains on your suit or just want a fun weekend project— the upcycling options are endless!
We love RIT dye because it's a non-toxic dye— all you need is a free afternoon, washing machine, a plastic container or stainless steel sink to get started! It's a fun and engaging way to breathe new life into your garments.
Once the suit is properly processed and dried, you can really see the new color come to life, a completely one-of-a-kind Noble suit. Aarica styles her "brand new" Utility Suit paired with her vintage chore jacket and cowboy boots, completing a fully sustainable look from head to toe.

Liv has been in the vintage world for years, incorporating her personal style through sourcing beautiful decor and clothing pieces as she builds her archival collection.
We've teamed up with Able Shoppe for a vintage-inspired giveaway valued up to $600 in prizes! One lucky winner will win two items of their choice from our Upcycled Denim Collection as well as curated goodies from Liv herself including: vintage earrings, studio pottery, matchbook, scarf, candle snuffer and Baggu reusable bag.

ENTER HERE >
Liv wearing our Upcycled Denim Utility Suit.

Tell us more about your curated shop: Able Shoppe and how you turned your love for vintage into the brand it is today? Able Shoppe, a curated vintage concept shop, began as a passion project in college to fuel my vintage obsession and express my growing interest in sustainability. Since deciding to pursue the business full time 5 years ago it has grown with me as my taste has evolved. The Able Shoppe brand is an expression of my style and a space for me to play creatively. Travel, food, vintage homes, vintage coffee table books, nature and people are important sources of inspiration for me. I love what I do!

How do you like to play with both contemporary and vintage pieces in your wardrobe? I think mixing vintage and contemporary clothing pieces is a key to styling up an interesting outfit! I value investing in quality basics and layering vintage statement pieces to add my own flair. For example I love pairing my Noble waffle thermals with a chunky vintage knit sweater or a 1970s Penny Lane coat.

Liv wearing our Paprika Waffle Top & Bottom and Noble Dad Hat.

What does sustainability mean to you? I am always learning more about sustainability and discovering new practices to incorporate into my life and business. Currently, I am really motivated by eliminating as much food waste as possible from my cooking and grocery shopping. Additionally, I focus on sourcing quality fabrics and materials when curating collections for Able Shoppe. I’m learning a lot about natural materials and how the way they're produced plays a role in sustainability. That’s a big part of why it’s such a joy for me to re-contextualize existing garments and objects!

What are you listening to or reading right now that has you feeling inspired? I am a big podcast girly. Recently I have been listening to This American Life, The Frugal Friends, and Pre-Loved podcast. However, my reading habits go in waves and this year I feel inspired to listen to more audio books because that tends to work best for my current season of life. Right now I am reading “You are the one you’ve been waiting for” which is about internal family systems.

What are your goals for Able Shoppe as we move through 2024? I am feeling really jazzed about 2024! I have a sense there is going to be a big shift in my business and I am not quite sure what that looks like yet. In the meantime, I am pursuing new opportunities to find clarity in that arena. Currently I am running my business in Chicago and have a shop residency at The Sunday Standard and an outpost at The Center of Order and Experimentation. My hope is to grow as an artist and a business woman while creating more work/life balance. Cheers!

Meet our latest Artist Feature: Alela Diane, PDX-based singer and songwriter with her newly released holiday album: 'It's Always Christmas Somewhere' by Alela Diane & the Hackles. You can see our buttery soft Waffle Thermals in Paprika are featured on the album cover of this special record!

To celebrate we're giving one lucky winner Waffles for their entire fam (4 pairs) & a vinyl pressing of her new album: ENTER HERE >

Tell us about your new album: 'It's Always Christmas Somewhere' — what made you want to release a holiday album? I have always wanted to make a holiday record. I love Christmas music. We have a hefty box of Christmas vinyl we've collected over the years and there are a lot of obscure holiday albums in that box that we listen to on repeat during the month of December. Every year my husband and I talk about how I really need to make my own holiday record, and this was the year. I was on tour with my friends, The Hackles, last February, and we decided that we had to make the holiday album a reality. We chose a wonderful collection of classics and lesser known songs we love, and spent a couple of days recording the album last spring.
What're you listening to or reading that has you feeling inspired this time of year? I just got home from tour, and haven't quite had the space to settle into a new book just yet. I think diving into a new cook book would be amazing, after not having cooked anything for weeks. And I think in general, taking space away from my phone and staying in the present moment is what I'm striving to do to feel grounded during the darkest time of the year. I've been listening to a lot of Peter Broderick (his song Let It Go was on repeat as I travelled). I've also been listening to my friend Kacey Johansing's new album, Daffodils.

Do you have a favorite cozy ritual for Winter? I drink a lot of tea, and make a lot of soup, slippers are always on my feet.
This giveaway closes Saturday 12/9 @ 11:59pm PST and one lucky winner will be notified via DM on Sunday AM. Be sure to enter on our Instagram for your chance to win!

Can you tell us a bit about your process and how your prints come to life? All patterns start with ink and brush. I draw shapes and lines and then compose them into patterns and repeat on the computer.

The colorways I create are meant to mingle with one another because, just like in nature, I believe there is a blissful alliance between all colors. They are alluring on their own, but when you bring them together, magical stuff happens. Color creates an unexpected come-togetherness of all the elements at play with my textiles, including the deliciously textured linen/cotton, to create a lived-in feel and look that gets better and better with age—whether displayed as art or put to work daily.
From textiles to totes– each design fits so well no matter what they're printed on! Do you have a favorite medium you love to see your own work on? Paint on canvas or paper - first and foremost, I love to see my work there.

You have a working studio based in San Francisco, how do you like to stay inspired as you create in your space? Honestly, my thing is more quietening my inspiration and itch to work. I am always inspired to paint, make, create, whatever it is, I always have the urge and the ideas. Bonus! Jen just launched brand new wearables on her site that you won't want to miss that pair well with our new exclusive print!

Meet the Austin-based artist and educator Jamie Young of @thebarefootdyer — specializing in natural dye education that honors nature and exploration while prioritizing inclusivity and community building.

We teamed up with Jamie this month to have her floral imprint our best-selling Utility Suit for a special giveaway (!!!) and chat about her journey as an artist and business owner.
Jamie wearing our Oat Milk Utility Suit.

How and when did you first fall in love with the art of natural dying? I feel like my journey into the world of natural dyeing started in childhood. Growing up, my parents instilled in me a deep love for nature. I grew up in a tiny house in the middle of nowhere. My siblings and I spent more time outdoors than most kids. My dad, an environmental scientist and botanist, and my mom, a passionate gardener, instilled a love for nature within me and taught me the importance of being a steward of the land at a young age. I can vividly recall sitting in the garden with my mom, smushing flowers onto wood and rocks, marveling at the way the colors transferred. Little did I know that these playful moments would lay the foundation for my future profession.

In college, I worked with synthetic dyes to create tie-dye pieces for myself, friends, and family. I stumbled across an article on indigenous people working with natural dyes in my now-husband's (then-boyfriend's) anthropology textbook and was immediately fascinated. I began experimenting with local dye plants, fell in love with the process and never looked back. From flowers to avocado pits you use countless different organic elements in your dye process— do you have a personal favorite? Choosing a favorite is always so difficult. Lately, I've developed a deep love for creating surface designs with leaves that grow locally to me. There's something almost meditative about carefully arranging them, envisioning how they'll imprint on the fabric, and anticipating the colors they will reveal.A big part of your process is focused around sustainability, do you have any advice for those who are aiming to create more sustainable habits in their day to day lives? I think it’s important to keep in mind that sustainable living varies from person to person, and it can be as straightforward as turning off lights in unoccupied rooms, bringing a reusable cup to your favorite coffee shop, unplugging devices when they're not in use, or even harvesting rainwater for your plants. These seemingly basic actions can have a significant impact. It's easy to overlook the fact that every purchase we make is essentially a vote for the world we want to see. Personally, I make an effort to support local farms, artisans, and small businesses as much as I can.

Fall is in the air, so what are you reading or listening to that have you feeling inspired through this season? As a work-at-home parent, finding moments to play is essential. It recharges me, lifts my spirits, and sparks my creativity. My version of play often involves indulging in a few precious minutes of fiction reading or listening (thank goodness for audio books). After spending so much time with scientific journals and texts for work, fiction feels like a little treat. Recently, I devoured "Happy Place" by Emily Henry. I love everything she writes! Currently, I'm immersed in "The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue," by V. E. Schwab and it’s been a great read so far. GIVEAWAY!

Want to win a floral printed Utility Suit of your own? One lucky winner will win a Utility Suit of your choice dyed by Jamie herself, featuring floral dye imprints on the front collar and pockets of our best-selling 100% organic canvas suit. Giveaway closes Friday, October 13th @ 11:59pm PST.

As a San Diego based brand ourselves— we love uplifting local brands and businesses within our community.

Meet Kathleen Dore— owner and designer of Best Bud Floral— with her newly opened brick and mortar best known for her colorfully bold and whimsical arrangements.

Today on the blog we join Kath in her new space rocking her fav Noble Utility Suit, of course.Kath wearing our Utility Suit in Chocolate.

When did you first fall in love with floral design? I fell in love with floral design when I started working as a floral apprentice at Native Poppy about 6 years ago, I had great teachers there who I am still very close with! I remember the day design clicked for me after months and months and all of the techniques and "rules" of floral design made sense. I like that there is structure and tradition and there's also space to buck it. Like most things I started off really um...bad at it but once I got better it became so fun. Do you have a favorite flower variety or color scheme that you tend to gravitate towards in your designs? COLOR. I love color, any color. In a world of beige— I am such an advocate for colorful flowers. I try to direct my clients to move in a more colorful and lively palette if I can. In my experience, no one is ever upset by the result when you go with what the florist recommends. The flowers I am drawn to change seasonally, but I am a diehard for reds and oranges right now especially dahlias and marigolds.

Your very own brick & mortar shop just opened (yay!) How does it feel to now design in a space that's totally your own? It feels really good... like, really good. It's comfortable, it feels authentic to me and there's AC. I am very excited for things to come. What are you reading or listening to that has you feeling inspired as we enter the Fall season? Oh I am so excited for fall & winter, I absolutely love the holidays. Get ready for Christmas to become my personality come December. My music taste is kind of embarrassing but whatever LOL. I'm listening to a lot of Hootie and the Blowfish right now. I also watch TikTok instead of tv these days and I love Victoria Paris and her style. Her combinations are sometimes bonkers; the colors she picks, the styles she experiments with... I'm like huh? Then I see it come together and I get it. She makes a lot of decisions that feel like the opposite of what I would pick and I like that. I want to do more of that.

We teamed up with Mckenzie this month to have her custom paint our best-selling Utility Suit for a special giveaway (!!!) and chat about her work.Mckenzie wearing her hand painted French Blue Utility Suit.

Tell us a little bit about how Parrott Paints started: Parrott Paints started in 2020 as a passion project and a self-love journey. My mission is to create art that inspires and resonates with people on a personal level, encouraging them to see the beauty that's around them every day. Starting Parrott Paints has been a constant celebration of embracing one's true self and the beauty that comes from accepting and pursuing one's passions.

You custom paint and personalize garments frequently, has that changed your relationship with your own personal style? Absolutely! Turning my closet into my canvas has seamlessly blurred the line between art and fashion. My personal style now holds memories, care & more color.

Where do you tend to draw your inspiration for your work? I draw my inspiration from the natural beauty that surrounds me and the kindness that I see in everyday acts. I hope to inspire others to appreciate our natural  world (& each other) in new and meaningful ways.

What's something you're reading or listening to that keeps your creative juices flowing? ‘A Gentle Reminder’ by Bianca Sparacino.

GIVEAWAY! Enter here to win your very own hand-painted @parrottpaints x Noble Utility Suit — inspired by the suit Mckenzie painted in the images above. Giveaway closes this Friday, August 11th @ 11:59pm PST— one winner will be announced Saturday 8/12 via DMs.

Known for her brightly colored desserts and Tiktok series 'Cakes x Outfits', we chat with Morgan on how her passion for sweet treats has slowly become a growing business.
Morgan in her kitchen wearing our Ash Utility Suit.

Baking and decorating cakes is truly an art form! Tell us how you started on this business endeavor: For as long as I can remember, I have loved putting time and effort into creating and sharing food. I started baking as a really young kid, took one cake-decorating class, and became obsessed. Before the age of 10, I knew I wanted to open a bakery, but had always considered it a bit of a pipe dream. For years, I made cakes for family and friends' birthdays' and celebrations, but the bakery dream fell by the wayside as I became passionate about politics and law. I was in college during the pandemic and made a birthday cake for my friend Juliet; it was peak COVID, so only four people were present to enjoy it and celebrate, but a bunch of friends saw it on Instagram. People started reaching out to buy cakes, I started sharing my cakes on TikTok, and now Saint Street is 2.5 years old!

Do you have a signature favorite kind of cake or other dessert you love to bake that never gets old? Despite cake being my main endeavor, I love working with fresh and seasonal fruit when it comes to baking for myself. I love experimenting with pies and crumbles. One of my favorite things to do is grab an assortment of herbs and fruits that catch my eye at a farmers market, make a crumble off the fly, top it with vanilla ice cream, and share with friends. (I think my favorite part of baking altogether is the “sharing with friends” part).

How has living in NYC so far shaped you and your work? I founded Saint Street Cakes in Boston and relocated to NYC a little bit over a year ago, which has been a huge change! I have been able to get more exposure to more diverse ingredients, befriend fellow bakers, and reach an even larger customer base; I feel like Saint Street has grown here in ways larger than I thought possible when I started selling cakes. I have also found a lovely community in New York– the friends I have met here have been such a heartwarming addition to the support system that drives me (and by extension, Saint Street). Morgan wearing our Paprika Waffle Tank & Oat Milk Chore Shorts.

What is your hope for the future for Saint Street Cakes? Currently, I am working a full-time job in the legal field while operating Saint Street Cakes by myself– it’s a handful! I feel so fulfilled in returning to the childhood dream of opening a bakery, and hope to be able to weave in all that I have learned and become passionate about along the way, like politics and grassroots causes. (Each month, I donate proceeds from cakes and online collaborations to different nonprofits fighting for a better world; some past donations include Black Health Matters, Sister Song, Send Chinatown Love, Lambda Legal, etc.).

One day, I hope to open a brick and mortar location that functions as a community space, while continuing giving back. While focusing on custom pre-ordered cakes, I also hope to sell cupcakes, cake-by-the-slice, coffee, etc. My dream Saint Street location includes lots of sunlight, some bistro tables, a little library, a stage in the corner for open mic nights or poetry readings, and a counter of beautiful cakes ready to be served! I want it to feel like a place people can gather.

What have you been reading or listening to lately that has you feeling inspired? I am always listening to music in the kitchen – I constantly add to my Saint Street Kitchen playlist. It's a mix of classic rock, jazz, blues, soul, and some more modern indie stuff– all curated for dancing in the kitchen. Check it out!

Need some colorful inspo for Summer? Meet San Diego based artist, Tiffany Lusteg — best known for her colorful abstract murals and large scale installations.

Today on the blog, we chat with Tiffany about her three dimensional work and how she's preparing for her soon-to-be Summer babe while her & her daughter Basil rock our 100% organic Utility Suits in her creative studio.

Tiffany working on her latest piece wearing our Paprika Utility Suit.

As a multi-faceted artist, tell us how you became involved in larger projects such as installations and murals? Was this always the direction you had in mind? My path to installation art and spatial design began by accident, really snowballing organically into what it is today. I stumbled upon weaving and the fiber arts in the thick of graduating college 9 years ago. Always being a creative individual that needed an outlet, I decided on a whim to order my first loom and dive rather blindly into the unknown. At that time, I really had no idea how deeply consumed or enamored I’d become with the craft, nor the influence it’d have on my life's path. I had shared a photo (on social media) of the first piece I made and someone had reached out, asking if they could purchase it. Many of my early days were spent creating fiber art and teaching weaving workshops in my community.

When my husband and I got married in 2017, I created a 6ft. x 6ft. tapestry (my largest piece at that time) for our wedding backdrop. Having been 'bitten' by the bug of working at the large scale, I really consider this the beginning of my journey into installation art. During that time, people began to commission wedding backdrops from me and with my husband Aaron's background in woodworking, we began to collaborate together creating works that were an indistinguishable blend of both my design and creative direction and his fabrication and craftsmanship.

Although fiber art began as my forte and first love, these days I am exploring a number of different mediums in my process, from digital artwork to three-dimensional space. With humble beginnings creating pieces from our garage and backyard, I am incredibly grateful to have since grown, creating artworks from my studio and workshop. My focused areas of practice continue to evolve through the years, now concentrating more heavily on large scale installation art and murals, creating experiential artworks for events, hotels, corporate clients, galleries, and private clients’ homes. More recently, I've begun exploring creative direction and spatial design, working with larger brands such as Gap, Madewell, Atelier Cologne, The Hilton and Marriott Hotels, and the Ritz Carlton. My work can be described as vivid, meaningful, and expressive, always trying to find new ways to brighten the world of those around me.You have a special interest in color theory throughout your work— do you have a favorite color palette that you tend to gravitate towards? I have always favored the nostalgia that warm tones conjure up, but go through different seasonalities of favoring certain color palettes depending on my mood or disposition during that time. Last winter, I was navigating through a difficult season of grief and this translated to a lot of my work incorporating vivid blues and deep tonal values. Since being pregnant these last few months, my work has unintentionally favored greens, palettes of springtide, and new growth. I don’t often dwell on the color choices I’m making but instead allow how I’m feeling to guide the way.
I source a great deal of my inspiration and creative energy from nature, the way organic colors and forms interact, and artists from the past. My husband and I recently took a trip to Costa Rica to celebrate the imminent arrival of our little one on the way, and being immersed in the remarkable beauty of the surrounding jungle and wildlife for those few weeks inspired a new fire in me upon returning home, so I am eager to see where that takes my work next.Do you find that your work and connection to color reflect in your personal style as well? Absolutely. Drawing on my affinity for the nostalgic, much of my collected wardrobe is vintage, also reflecting color palettes and silhouettes from eras’ past. Similarly to my work, I’m choosing clothes based on an emotional posture so there is immense range to what I’m wearing each day, from androgynous utilitarianism to more delicate and feminine silhouettes.

With a little one and a new babe on the way (yay!), has motherhood taught you anything new you weren't expecting as you navigate through creative projects? That I don’t have it all figured out or know exactly where I’m headed with each new day (both in parenting and in my creative endeavors) and that is okay. I am mostly following what feels right in my bones, chasing my curiosities, and surrendering to wherever they lead me. Motherhood has made me a more flexible person and in learning to be gentle with my children, it’s shaped how gently I treat my own heart as well.

I’m learning to embrace the process and imperfections, rather than focusing on the polished finished product. Being a detail-oriented and self-critical individual, I’ve struggled to allow myself the space to make mistakes and only through motherhood discovered the capacity this way of thinking has to stifle and suffocate creativity. I’m continuously learning and re-learning to embrace the messier parts of life and find the beauty in our unique flaws.

I hope my children, too, learn to follow their own curiosities, protect their heart from comparison to others, and know that most fulfillment can be found along the journey rather than in the destination. We are all on this parallel path, a lifetime spent carving away at the same sculptural self portrait, always starting with more than we need and narrowing, narrowing. Tiffany and Basil wearing matching Oat Milk Utility Suits.

What's something that you're reading or listening to that has you feeling inspired? Depending on the day, I am listening to anything from Chaka Khan to Mazzy Star to get into a creative headspace. Most of the artists and writers I look to for inspiration are those from the past; Helen Frankenthaler, Georgia O'Keeffe, Eva Hesse, Sylvia Plath, Simone De Beauvoir, and Denise Levertov. In addition to visual art, I share a deep enthusiasm for reading and writing poetry, with a sizable admiration for the women who were one of few during their day, pioneering the way for female artists and writers today. I’m currently reading through some of Mary Oliver’s early poetry and Joan Didion’s Play It As It Lays.

NEW NOBLE DENIM IS almost here— in collaboration with the New Denim Project, we've spent the past two years developing our infamous Noble pieces in upcycled, chemical and dye free denim!

We launched our best-selling Utility Suits in March and we're adding NEW Utility Dresses & Chore Shorts for Adults launching Thursday 5/18 @ 9am PST. Why upcycled denim? The denim industry is notorious for being an environmentally damaging industry. A single pair of non-organic cotton jeans may use upwards of 1,800 gallons of water. Additionally, most of the cotton used is grown with harmful fertilizers and pesticides which are bad for both us and the planet.

Over the past year and a half we have devoted our time hunting down the most environmentally friendly upcycled denim and we've been privileged to partner with a woman-run family owned factory to produce this limited collection. UTILITY DRESS

https://chuaphuochai.com/blogs/news/noble-artist-series-sheena-marshall-jewelry 2023-04-20T10:03:51-07:00 2023-04-20T10:03:51-07:00 Noble Artist Series: Sheena Marshall Jewelry Paige Auber

Meet Denver based jeweler & metalsmith artist, Sheena of @sheenamarshalljewerly known for her timeless & minimal jewelry and sustainable practices.

Today on the blog, we chat with Sheena about her niche craft and how her own ethical principles became a foundation for her business today:

Tell us a little bit about your story & how you started practicing the art of metalsmithing: From an early age, I was immersed in creativity thanks to my family. My dad, an engineer, and I crafted the most intricate school projects. My mother's artistic talent lay in creating nature-inspired oil paintings. I was even taught the art of stained glass by my grandpa.

The first medium I really experimented with was polymer clay jewelry in high school. I sold pieces of my own creations during my waitressing shifts. Then I had my first taste of metalsmithing and I was instantly captivated, never turning back since.Sheena wearing our Ash Utility Suit in a size Small.

How does your personal passion for sustainability bleed into this art? Did you find it difficult to shift these values into your business as well? All of my choices for the company are based on my beliefs and reflect who I am as an individual. By considering if each decision is in accordance with my values, the decision-making process is much simpler. The core values include:

  • Timeless Designs - prioritizing designs that are classic and enduring, rather than chasing fleeting fast fashion trends.
  • Quality Craftmanship – metalsmithing using high-quality recycled solid gold, gold fill, and sterling silver.
  • Sustainability – I work meticulously to figure out exact measurements to ensure there are minimal scraps left over. When enough scraps are collected, they are sent back to the supplier for them to be recycled properly and reused.

Does your minimal and timeless jewelry reflect your own personal style at all? My approach to style is mirrored in the minimal and timeless jewelry I choose to invest in. Rather than selecting pieces based on fleeting trends, I opt for items from small batch, sustainable brands that will endure. This means I can wear the same pieces for work, play and beyond - always being sure to choose pieces that will remain staples in my wardrobe over time. When you aren't working in your studio, what are some of your favorite ways to stay connected to your creativity? Outside of working in my studio, I take delight in finding creative ways to stay connected. As an avid learner, I take every opportunity to get to know my customers in person at local markets. Additionally, I love meeting up with other small business owners at coffee shops to discuss business decisions. But when I'm not focused on work, I spend quality time with my family, exploring all the museums Denver has to offer. All these activities ultimately fuel my creativity.

What have you been reading or listening to lately that has you feeling inspired? Recently, I have been learning about stone setting with great enthusiasm. This was something I was interested in from the start, so I am taking this opportunity to practice the methods and find sustainable sources for diamonds for upcoming gold pieces. I'm excited to explore this path for my business and get to work on all the design ideas I have been brewing up! Keep an eye out!FOLLOW SHEENA HERE: WEBSITE & INSTAGRAM

Launching for Adults and Kids next Thursday 3/9 @ 9am PST.

Noble is proud to be partnering with The New Denim Project to introduce Noble Upcycled Denim. As its name suggests, the project exists to use a new, different type of denim that’s better for you and better for the only planet we must call home. The secret? Circularity. A raw denim fabric in its purest form. Made from collecting and sorting post-industrial textile waste from local jean garment factories in Guatemala. The raw, natural materials are collected, ground into fiber, and spun into new yarns without the use of a single dye or chemical. Mere miles away, you’ll find Irma’s humble sew shop where this New Denim is transformed into our Noble upcycled denim creations that are one-hundred percent natural, compostable, and exist at the intersection of fashion and function.

Over the past year and a half we have devoted our time hunting down the most environmentally friendly upcycled denim for our suits and we've been privleged to partner with a woman-run family owned factory to produce this limited collection.

MEET IRMA, Guatemala's factory owner, mother & expert sewer:

Tell us the story of how you started your business? I started working when I was very young at a factory near the capital, which is where I met my husband, I was 14 and he was 18. I got married when I was 17 years old and we started our family. While married, my husband encouraged me to take different sewing classes since I was unable to keep working at the factory. I knew how to use a sewing machine, but I did not know how to cut patterns & I had to start thinking of ways of how to make more money since growing our family by 4 children, Brenda, Jonathan, Quebyn & Robin. On some occasions I would need to go to work, but I always felt like I needed to take care of my children. By the end of 2013 I gained confidence to do a bigger project, I made the whole costumes for a dance group for the local fair in my town. By the following year, my brother in law was working with some foreigners & some girls asked him if he knew of someone who knew how to sew, and he recommended me. Her name was Jessica of Stela 9. I have to admit, I was very scared, but it has definitely been the best decision I’ve ever made. I started off with some shorts for her and they loved my work. From then on, our family's situation got better and better and I was also able to help my sister with work. Jessica then connected me with Averie & Rachel and because of them I have been able to get a lot more work which opened the doors to more brands getting to know my work which led to growing my team. Some of the brands I have worked with are Tribe Alive which are now Laude The Label, Minna Goods, Marra Home, plus more and now I am able to add Noble as well. The road has not been easy, but I have been working hard to be able to improve the quality of my work every single day.
What do you feel makes your workshop special? What are you most proud of with the work that you do? What I think makes our workshop special, I think, is the fact that I work with my family and I am given the opportunity to help more people with work. And what makes me feel proud of my work is that it has been able to cross borders and because of that I have been able to provide for my children.

What do you love most about living in Guatemala? What I love the most about living here is the weather, nature and its landscapes. I live where there's a volcano called Volcan de Agua in the capital of Guatemala. I also love being from here because of its culture and traditions and for its diversity in languages, even though I don't speak any local dialects. Our upcycled Denim Utility Suits are a limited collection— this 'shade' of denim will not be able to be replicated making this a one-of-a-kind drop or suits!Available for Adults in sizes XS-XXL, these will fit similarly to our canvas suits yet be a bit more structured of a fit.Norma is 5'11" wearing a size Small / Bust: 31.5" Waist: 27" Hips: 38"Tam is 5'8" wearing a size XL / Bust: 44" Waist: 38" Hips: 48"

Meet San Francisco based artist, Erin Fong & her latest installation 'The Sensation of Color' at the Bedford Gallery which explores colors and how they affect our emotional responses. Today on the blog, we chat with Erin about her recent gallery show and where she draws her inspiration.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your craft as a letterpress printer: I took my first letterpress class pretty late into my college life and was instantly hooked. The medium is so tactile and hands-on. I mix all the ink by hand and feed each sheet of paper through a press from the 1960s (one of the last models made before letterpress became obsolete) and it results in an impression that you can both see and feel. It’s such a special process that was once utilitarian and has now returned as an elevated art form.

You have an exhibit called 'the Sensation of Color' at the Bedford Gallery that just opened this month! What was the process like bringing your vision to life? I have never been so proud of something in my life. The Sensation of Color is a years worth of work from conception to creation and fills the 3500 square foot gallery beautifully. It features the largest iteration of The Friendship Project, an ongoing letterpress series of collected advice on friendship, that is displayed in a chromatic array spanning 48 feet. There are even some cute phones that recite pieces of advice when you pick up. However, anyone can call my Friendship Phone Line at anytime to experience this. 951-FRNDSHP. I’m also debuting a series of paintings, Chroma Clusters and Fuzzy Feelings, that capture a moment in time by translating feelings to colors. There are also two large scale site specific installations that are really fun. Color Corridor is a 75’ maze that encourages viewers to notice their internal shifts and moods as they travel through the color spectrum. Whereas Color Communion is a light and sound sensory experience (shoutout  to my friend Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi for the soundscape!) that further allows viewers to be immersed in color. If you’re in the Bay Area go experience it! It’s on view until April 2, 2023. Bedford Gallery ~ 1601 Civic Drive, Walnut Creek, CA.Erin wearing our Dusty Rose Utility Suit in a size small.

How has your personal style (and love for wearing color) adapted over the years? What colors are you gravitating towards in 2023? I used to be a very colorful dresser in my teens, got into basics and neutrals in my 20s, and have re-emerged as a color lover in my 30s. I tend to let color lead as the main design element in my wardrobe and gravitate towards monochrome or bold color looks. I am perpetually drawn towards pinks and yellows. But also LOVE an all white look accented with color. I am curious about adding more prints and patterns into my wardrobe this year.

You've lived in the Bay Area for over a decade, what are your favorite things to do in your city? I’ve lived in both San Francisco and now the East Bay so I feel like I have a pretty full experience of living in the Bay. I love SF for its museums (SFMoma, Minnesota Street Projects, ICA SF), cute bars and delicious restaurants but also love Berkeley/Oakland for the sunshine, massive hiking/outdoor areas, and its slightly more relaxed lifestyle.
What are you listening to or reading that have you feeling inspired lately? So much of the work that I created for The Sensation of Color is through my personal work in therapy. I am continually learning and meeting myself and seeing what expression and shape that may take. I started a daily walk practice last year with the encouragement of This Morning Walk podcast with Alex Elle and Libby Delana (who has walked everyday for over 10 years!) and use that time to connect with myself and be present. I am a pretty avid reader and somehow managed to read 25 books last year that range from fiction to wellness.  I am currently reading How to do the Work by Dr. Nicole LaPera (@the.Holistic.Psychologist) which feels like a nice way to start the year.

Meet Brooklyn, NY based Freelance Illustrator Laura Supnik - we're chatting about her day to day work life, her inspirations, and advice for aspiring artists on the blog.

Laura is wearing our Oat Milk Utility Suit & Molasses Waffle Top + Molasses Waffle Bottom
Tell us a bit about yourself & your work:

I’m a full time freelance illustrator based in Brooklyn, New York. I mostly make digital artwork and love simple linework and colors. I do work ranging from editorial pieces in magazines, to art for brands in advertisements, to in person illustrations at live events.

What does a normal work day look like for you as a freelance artist working from home and living in Brooklyn?

I have a small office inside of my apartment, but I often work in other spaces around my place, or go sit at a coffee shop to switch it up. The best part about being freelance is being in charge of my schedule. So if there’s a day where I feel overwhelmed and need a break I can clean the house, or if I feel like switching it up and working at 8 pm, I can allow myself to do that. I try to create a schedule at the beginning of each week because it ends up being pretty different for me depending on what work I have planned for that month. I’d say typically I’ll wake up, work on projects until lunch, take a break and do some errands or other projects that aren’t work related to break up the day, then go back to art for a while. But it really varies on what projects I have going on at the current time!

Do you have a favorite concept and/or color scheme that you continue to revisit throughout your illustrations?

I’ve always loved plants, so even from the early stages of my work, you can see a lot of them included in my pieces. Living in a big city inspires me with the amount of buildings and people. I’m always people-watching and taking walks around Brooklyn, so I tend to draw a lot of that city life. I’m drawn to bright simple colors but I tend to switch up which ones I use depending on the mood I’m in. It’s been fun to watch my art grow in concept and style over the years. I think it’s important to try new things, so I love when I notice that it looks different than it used to.

Would you say your relationship with art has influenced your own personal style (fashion)? If yes, how?

Definitely. Both fashion and illustration are forms of self expression. My relationship with clothing has become more curated over the years. I put a lot of thought into my artwork, so I try to do the same with fashion. Both are a process. Ethical brands are really important to me and it’s just as crucial for the piece of clothing to be made thoughtfully as it is to be cute and comfortable. I appreciate the care that goes into clothing and into the company to make it what it is.

What have you been reading or listening to lately that has you feeling inspired?

I recently got back into reading this year and have read 79 books! Reading in general has been so inspiring to me. I find I gravitate toward light sci fi or dystopian books because they’re so different from our reality. It helps inspire me in a new way, appreciate our reality, and therefore inspire my artwork. Even though it’s not one specific book, it’s been eye opening to read so many different things. I get so in my head, and in my own world - it’s been really helpful for me to immerse myself in new stories.

Do you have any advice for those fellow-aspiring illustrators out there?

Keep making and sharing your artwork! The more you share your art the more people will see it, and like it, and hire you for it. Also make artist friends. Reach out to artists you admire, buy them coffee and ask them questions. Everyone has a different story and it helps to learn bits and pieces about being an artist from different sources.

Stay tuned for a special giveaway coming this week ;-)

Winter is wearing our Prairie Print Utility Suit, Esme is wearing our Pine Utility Suit & Sarah is wearing our Oat Milk Utility Suit.

Tell us about yourself: My name is Sarah Wright Olsen. I am an actor, a writer, a podcaster (The Mother Daze podcast) and I own a company called baeo.com which is an organic skincare line for the whole family. I have 3 children. Wyatt is 9, Esme is 6 and Winter is 2. My first Children’s book just launched and its called Happiness is the Journey!

Tell us about your experience of writing a children's book and the idea of this story came to be? I have written poetry and stories for as long as I can remember. When I go through story ideas in my head I always come up rhyming little lines together and wonder “oh is this the beginning or middle of a story?" When I was in my early 20s in LA I was acting but had some time on my hands when I wasn’t working and I took classes at UCLA extension on children’s book writing. It was a time in which I could focus on this passion and read tons of picture books and get an understanding of what I was really drawn to. Many years and three children later I wrote HAPPINESS IS THE JOURNEY.  During the pandemic there was a day when my daughter was feeling sad we weren’t at school with her friends. I was listening to her on zoom school and her teachers were trying to explain mindfulness and I had an idea about how to write this story about being present right where we are and appreciating the world around us. Like a download from the universe the story just kind of burst out of me and I wrote it on my phone while breastfeeding my baby. It was almost a year later that the story found its home at Lumilly and through many edits and the brilliant work of our illustrator Natalia Moore our main character Clover and her journey came to life!

What have you learned about yourself in the process of telling Clover's story?

It's just been a constant reminder to do just that— to be grateful for exactly what's happening right now and to notice the world around me and to be present and I just love that it's just as much a teachable story.

How do you balance motherhood alongside pursuing your creative endeavors? You know, with all of these people around I think it allows me to show up in the way I want to as a Mom. And it allows me to go when I have that moment where I'm like I really want to try this thing— I have all of these people, all of these dear friends, these women friends and my partner going "yeah you should try that!" And it makes me feel a little less afraid and gives me that boost of courage to do it. I have so much gratitude for those humans and there is no me balancing it on my own.

Meet Nashville based, small batch ceramicist, Chelsea Faith known for her signature traditional tattoo-inspired hand-thrown ceramics, shares her personal artistic journey with us today on the blog:

"I was afraid at first that turning my art into a business would ruin the fun but it has done the opposite. I feel so lucky to be able to share my art with people around the world."
Chelsea wearing our Ash Utility Suit & Oat Milk Rib Turtleneck
We understand you fell in love with ceramics after taking a pottery class in 2018, how has your relationship with this medium grown over the years? Over the years my love for ceramics has grown. I was afraid at first that turning my art into a business would ruin the fun but it has done the opposite. I feel so lucky to be able to share my art with people around the world. Not only that but I have built amazing relationships with other ceramic and non- ceramic artists near and far in these last few years. I have had incredible opportunities like speaking to aspiring artist and teaching ceramic classes. I feel so lucky and delighted that this is what I get to do with my life.

Do you have a creative routine or flow while gearing up for a day working in your studio? My days have changed drastically since my son started school. Its been an amazing adjustment for me since it gives me more structure. I always start my day with a walk to Elegy, my favorite coffee shop that’s next door. Since I’m in there almost daily, I have built relationships with the staff and love to have a little chat with them before I go to my studio to work alone all day. Ha! Once I get in my studio, I turn on music or a tv show, light incense, change my clothes and get to work. Those few small moments make such an impact on my day and mood.
With you throwing / hand building these pieces and your partner A.J. tying in his traditional tattoo hand-painted style— what have you learned during this experience of owning and running a creatively fueled business with your partner all while raising your son? Phew, I/we have learned so much! Mostly, that you can’t do it all. In the beginning it started with us both being very hands on and creating everything together. We quickly realized that it was exhausting but mostly exhausting Aj since he’s also working full time as a tattoo artist. I have since learned how to do everything from beginning to end with my ceramics. By making that change we learned it was better for our relationship and that we needed some boundaries so we weren’t working all the time. More recently we stopped working when Feltons out of school and this has had such an impact on our family.
Tell us your favorite ways to unplug and be present with your family + friends in Nashville, TN? With my family, I try to plan activities we can do together at home. Usually that means baking with Felton, playing a video game together or doing something artsy - like coloring or drawing. We also love to walk around the Opryland hotel, since they have a wonderful arboretum or grab dinner at one of our many favorite small restaurants near us. We are frequent visitors at our favorite ice cream shop, Soft Serve Station. With my friends, I’m typically grabbing dinner with them at a new restaurant, checking out some live music or chilling at each others houses listening to music and chatting.

What've you been listening to or reading lately that has you feeling inspired?
I have this issue where I fall asleep whenever I try to read. While most of the podcasts I listen to are about true crime or self help, I can’t say they inspire me much. I find most of my inspiration when I take walks outdoors or when I am driving around looking at nature and architecture. The colors in nature are what inspires me most, even when seasons change to this gloomy season we are in. More recently, I have been inspired by my therapy sessions. We have been diving into EMDR and doing work that’s been really enlightening. Its made me more excited for the future and its helping me gain a new appreciation for the work I’m doing in my studio.
